We’re going to answer this ooc, since answering it would mean Iomos breaks the 4th wall and we can’t have that. :3
Consider Iomos and Ergot slightly AU from Hussie’s universe, and this is for factual reasons (other than this universe being, well, not destroyed by sgrub and all that). I am aware that Hussie states in prose that all trolls have the 6/6 pattern, but I don’t think that’s realistic for an entire race. It’s understandable as far as the Homestuck webcomic goes simply because all the trolls in cannon are partaking in sgrub, which seems to require a name pattern (or Hussie is just ocd), but I don’t think it’s functional in the sandbox world he’s made for us. He may not be concerned with it and he just wanted to add that pattern in because he loves patterns, but I want you to think about this for a second.
Take this into account: the trolls are a race that have conquered more than one planet, and seem to be expanding an empire across an entire galaxy. Now assume you need around 2 billion individuals for a populated planet. This isn’t a planet that’s overpopulated or that at it’s capacity; the earth has around 6 billion people living on it. But to have a planet that’s securely controlled by trolls, we’ll assume that 2 billion is a good number.
Now, the Drake equation (google it) estimates anywhere between 0 to 182 million planets can be inhabited by life in OUR galaxy. If we’re assuming that the galaxy the trolls live in is anything like our own, we’ll take the same parameters. 91 million planets is the middle of Drake’s range of hospitable planets, so we’re going to use that as a rough estimate to how many planets the Trolls *could* take over in their galaxy. At their full capacity, the trolls would need 2 billion individuals for each of 91 million planets. That is roughly 1.82x10^17 trolls.
That’s a lot of trolls.
The convention of naming for these trolls is a syllable uttered then rendered into text, so it has to be pronounceable. That limits the number of letter combinations available to be used for names. Now I’m not saying you can’t have doubles of names or whatever, but you’re looking at a LOT of doubles. There’s a lot of combinations you can get out of 6/6, but there are too many trolls for that to work. Seriously. It’s just impractical. I feel like even if they’d used that convention at some point in their history, they would have discarded it as soon as they began expanding outward. It would be a necessary change to keep the trolls from getting confused, et cetera. Especially when you take into account the pride of the higher blood castes. Do you think they’d want to be confused with a lowblood? Really?
No, I don’t think 6/6 works. So I didn’t abide by it when I created Iomos. So if that really bothers you, just consider them AU. :3
Also, to all our other watchers, thanks so much for sticking around! I’m sorry we haven’t been as active for the past two weeks, but that was because the latest round of Trolldown was due a couple days ago. We’re getting back on track now. We’re thirty or so questions behind, though, so bear with us! And keep asking just because that’s fun. >3> We’re planning on keeping the box open unless the backlog gets real ridiculous.
